An online guide to ethical living…
Welcome to EthicalHome.com! This site aims to provide up to date information on how to be an ethical consumer and how to live an eco friendly lifestyle. There's so much talk these days of issues such as organic food, fair trade products and environmentally friendly goods, that it can be confusing for the average consumer to know where to start. This site aims to be a one-stop resource for living ethically, making it easier for you to make ethical choices and find quality eco-friendly products for your home. We all tend to lead busy lives, so by putting together this site I'm aiming to get loads of information all in one place, so it's easier for you to make ethical decisions. I offer explanations of the current issues and offer guidance to help you implement a greener lifestyle. I'm always adding new content when I come across relevant news articles or I discover a new eco company.
Being ethical is a matter of personal choice, according to our individual ethics and beliefs of what is right and wrong. My own views are that both consumers and companies should place more emphasis on the social and environmental responsibilities of their actions. As a consumer, this means being aware of where your money is going every time you pay for a product or service. For instance, I buy certified organic food because I know that it's been produced in a sustainable way that works in harmony with nature and the environment. Where available I seek out fair trade coffee and other products, and I buy clothes that haven't been made in a so-called sweatshop, so I can be assured that the workers have been paid a fair wage and haven't been exploited.
I also believe in living a more natural lifestyle that not only is more environmentally friendly, is better for our health as well. In practice, this means I look for eco-friendly cleaning products that aren't laden with artificial chemicals. I use personal hygiene and beauty products made from natural ingredients to reduce my exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. I use organic essential oils to promote wellbeing. When doing any home improvements, I look for eco paints and wood products from sustainable sources. More and more research is suggesting that being exposed a cocktail of toxic chemicals can lead to health problems and illness, so it makes sense to take a more natural approach.
Not only do I recycle, I buy recycled products such as stationery for my home office. I aim to reduce the amount of packaging I buy in the first place, and reuse things where I can rather than throw things away. I look for energy efficient products, from light bulbs to a new washing machine, to reduce my carbon footprint, as climate change is something that affects us all. Food miles is a big issue, so I buy local produce where I can and grow my own herbs and vegetables. As well as eco products, there's a good range of ethical services available these days, from green energy suppliers, ethical banks and credit cards, to ecotourism holidays.
I hope you'll find the information on this site useful, and that it'll help you to make your own personal choices about what you consider to be an ethical lifestyle. Together we can make a difference!
